The Daily Californian declared independence from the University of California in 1971 after its governing board disagreed with an editorial it published and attempted to fire three of its editors. In establishing its independence, the Daily Cal signed an agreement with the university, allowing the publication to use the name “The Daily Californian” and distribute its paper on campus. The agreement also ensures the Daily Cal remains by and for the students and that the university does not compromise the paper’s editorial independence.
